Press release

Date: 2081/02/03

In the context that Nepal is a party to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, it is the general responsibility of the state to implement the provisions of the Convention and the laws and regulations that are adapted to it. It is the right of disabled people to get that service. But for its implementation Deepak Bhandari, a completely disabled person from Tanahun District Myagde Rural Municipality, as well as organizations and individuals working in the field of disability, have been holding a hunger strike and pressure rally since the beginning of this federation.

On 14th Chaitra 2080, the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens reached a three-point agreement with the protesting parties. But after the government did not implement the agreement on the specified date, since the date 18th of Baisakh, 2081, Shri Deepak Bhandari and other disabled campaigners started their indefinite hunger strike in Shanti Batika Ratnapark Kathmandu, even on the 16th day, the government is delaying to fulfill its promise and implement the law.

In order to fulfill the conditions agreed by the government with the agitating parties, the protest by the security personnel during the peaceful rally held by the campaign workers of the disability sector on the 2nd of June 2081 has raised doubts about the sensitivity of the responsible bodies of the government towards the concerns of the disabled people. We strongly request to fulfill the rights given by the law and the promises made by the government, and express our solidarity towards the movement for the protection of Deepak Bhandari's life, and to start the personal support service as per the agreement made by the government without delay.
